چکیده

Automated method for exchange transfusion Sir, In their report (Archives, 1972, 47, 815) M. G. Philpott and A. Banerjee presented a technique of exchange transfusion based on the use of a Holter infusion pump with two channels connected to umbilical vein and artery. In 1971 we (Garofalo, Minerva, and Baltieri, 1971) described a method of exchange transfusion by means of Holter microinfusion rolling pump; this method was considered by us as a further modification of exchange transfusion 'by continuous drip' suggested by Valentine (1962, 1966) and, in Italy, by Cavalieri (1963), Cavalieri, Garofalo, and Mastella (1963), and Cavalieri, Mastella, and Battaglino (1967). In our paper we suggested connecting one circuit of the pump with a catheter inserted in the umbilical vein (for blood withdrawal) and the second channel to a scalp or arm vein for blood transfusion, since connexion with umbilical artery may be difficult or a source of complications in some cases, as described by the authors. Automated method for exchange transfusion.

Automated method for exchange transfusion Sir, Philpott and Banerjee (Archives, 1972) are to be congratulated on their method of exchange transfusion using a two-channel Holter pump. Many have been interested in this technical problem, and the Holter pump provides an acceptable solution. The pumping rate of the machine is accurate to ±3%. More importantly, the discrepancy between the flow rates...

Isolation and purification of albumin from human plasma by direct and combined approach of ion-exchange chromatography and comparison of the final products quality obtained by both methods

Background: Due to multiple roles of albumin in the body, injection of its medicinal product as one of the therapeutic or management strategies under conditions such as severe bleeding, burns, liver failure, and neonatal hemolytic diseases is on the physicians' agenda. Considering that albumin is the most abundant plasma protein, designing an appropriate method to purify it is highly important....

Hyperbilirubinemia Following Exchange Transfusion with G-6-PD Deficient Donor Blood

Background: The incidence of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency in Iran is estimated at 10-14.9%.  The donor blood in blood banks is not screened routinely for this enzyme deficiency and such blood may be used for neonatal exchange transfusion. Objective: To study the effect of G-6-PD deficient blood in neonatal exchange blood transfusion. Methods: In a prospective study, serum...

Evaluation of the Severity and Duration of Thrombocytopenia following Exchange Transfusion in neonatal hyperbilirubinemia

Background: Infant jaundice is one the most common causes of hospitalization in infant in the first month of birth, which is defined an abnormal increase in blood bilirubin levels. Exchange transfusion is the recommended treatment for neonatal jaundice who do not respond to phototherapy and experience dangerous complication of jaundice and signs of kernicterus. However, this treatment may lead ...

Red blood cell exchange transfusion as an adjunct treatment for severe pediatric falciparum malaria, using automated or manual procedures.

Pediatric falciparum malaria is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Cerebral malaria and renal failure are common among children with a high percentage of malaria-infected red blood cells. We report 3 cases of imported pediatric falciparum malaria with central nervous system involvement and/or renal failure that were treated initially with intravenous antimalarial therapy, with ...
